Platinum Rate Today in Himachal Pradesh – 7 Nov 2026, 8 AM IST

• Today's platinum rate
• PGI certification and Pt950 purity
• Making charges and GST
• Where to buy platinum

The figures in the live table are reference rates for Pt 950 and Pt 900 platinum, refreshed every business day against international bullion benchmarks. Platinum remains the smallest of the three metal categories in Himachal Pradesh, well behind both the state's dominant silver trade and its smaller gold category.

This page covers today's rate, PGI certification and Pt950 purity, making charges and GST, where to buy, taxation and a detailed FAQ.

The weight table converts today's per gram rate into the denominations relevant to platinum jewellery buyers, from a single gram through 10 grams, for both Pt 950 and Pt 900 purity.

As with the rest of India, platinum here is sold almost exclusively as finished rings, bands and pendants rather than loose bullion, coins or bars.

A single day's rate tells you very little on its own. The last ten trading sessions show whether today's print sits at the top of a run, at the bottom of a pullback, or in the middle of a flat stretch.

Platinum's international price is set by a smaller, more concentrated global market than gold or silver, dominated by South Africa and Russia, which can make its short term movements less predictable.

The trend table sets today's rate against its opening and closing values over seven days, thirty days and twelve months. Platinum's price is shaped heavily by global automotive demand for catalytic converters, alongside jewellery demand.

For Himachal Pradesh's small number of platinum retailers, this table is used mainly to set jewellery pricing rather than to inform any investment decision.

Platinum trades internationally in US dollars per troy ounce, set by a global market considerably smaller than gold or silver. This rate converts at the prevailing USD to INR exchange rate and picks up customs duty and GST before reaching Indian retail.

Since platinum is not traded as bullion at any Indian retail market, Himachal Pradesh's small number of retailers price finished platinum jewellery against this international reference rate directly.

Global automotive demand, mine supply out of South Africa and Russia, and investment flows move the international platinum price. The rupee's exchange rate and Indian import duty changes move the local price on top of that.

Locally, wedding and engagement season brings whatever modest seasonal uplift exists in platinum buying among Himachal Pradesh's small pool of buyers.

Pt 950 platinum, 95 percent pure, is by far the standard used for platinum jewellery sold in Himachal Pradesh and across India, including the large majority of engagement rings from established brands.

Pt 900, 90 percent pure, appears occasionally but is far less common. Confirm which purity a quote refers to before comparing options.

The rate shown on this page is the metal price alone. What you pay at the counter adds a making charge, then GST at 3 percent on the combined total of metal value plus making charge.

What making charges typically run

• Simple platinum bands | roughly 15 to 25 percent, reflecting platinum's density and the skill required to work it
• Diamond set engagement rings | roughly 20 to 35 percent

Making charges on platinum in Himachal Pradesh tend to run above gold, since platinum's hardness makes it genuinely more labour intensive to work with.

Platinum jewellery in India is not covered under the BIS mandatory hallmarking scheme that applies to gold and silver. Purity is identified through the Pt 950 or Pt 900 stamp, supported by certification from the Platinum Guild International.

• Look for the Pt 950 or Pt 900 purity stamp engraved on the piece
• Ask for a PGI Certificate of Authenticity with a verifiable serial number

Buying from an established, PGI affiliated jeweller in Shimla remains the safer route, given the absence of mandatory BIS traceability for platinum.

Only a handful of Shimla's larger jewellery showrooms, mainly around The Mall, stock any platinum jewellery at all, and selection is limited to a small range of rings and bands rather than the fuller collections available in mainland metros.

As the state capital, Shimla remains the only realistic place in Himachal Pradesh to see platinum jewellery in person before buying.

Platinum is denser than gold, naturally white without plating, and hypoallergenic, qualities that have driven its popularity for engagement rings nationally. In Himachal Pradesh, this trend has found only a very modest audience, given how strongly the state's traditional silver first jewellery culture shapes local demand.

Silver remains the default choice for weddings and everyday wear across Himachal Pradesh, with gold reserved mainly for the nath. Platinum has found only a small niche around modern engagement rings, concentrated in Shimla.

White gold is yellow gold alloyed with white metals and plated with rhodium, which wears off over time and needs periodic replating. Platinum is naturally white throughout, needing no plating.

Platinum is also denser than gold, so a platinum ring of the same visual size genuinely contains more metal by weight, part of why total price can exceed a comparable gold design.

Platinum here is best understood as a specialty category rather than a mainstream one. Only a handful of Shimla showrooms stock any at all.

For a genuinely wide selection, ordering online from a certified national brand remains the most reliable route for buyers anywhere in Himachal Pradesh, and is often faster than visiting multiple showrooms.

Platinum jewellery manufacturing in India is concentrated in specialist mainland hubs with the specific machinery platinum's density and hardness require, an investment that makes little economic sense given Himachal Pradesh's very small platinum retail market.

Every piece of platinum jewellery sold here is manufactured elsewhere and shipped in as a finished product, unlike silver and, to a lesser extent, gold, where local retail and craft traditions have more established scale.

Platinum entering the Indian jewellery trade arrives mostly as semi-finished components supplied to manufacturers in hubs like Mumbai and Jaipur, worked into finished rings and bands, a very small share of which reach Shimla through wholesale relationships.

Given the tiny volumes involved, national import policy changes for platinum have a less immediately visible effect on retail pricing here than equivalent changes for gold or silver.

Pt 950 platinum is 95 percent pure, the standard used for the large majority of platinum jewellery sold in India, including any stock reaching Shimla. Pt 900, 90 percent pure, is far less common.

The Platinum Guild International issues a Certificate of Authenticity carrying a serial number, the PGI logo and the jeweller's identification mark. Since platinum is not BIS hallmarked, this certificate is the closest equivalent to a hallmark available to buyers here.

A small number of larger Shimla showrooms carry limited platinum stock. For a wider selection, ordering online from an established, PGI certified national brand with delivery to Himachal Pradesh is generally the more practical route.

What to check wherever you buy

• The Pt 950 or Pt 900 purity stamp on the piece
• A PGI Certificate of Authenticity with a verifiable serial number
• A proper GST invoice carrying weight, purity, rate and making charge

Resale is genuinely limited, given how few shops stock platinum in the first place. Approach the original retailer first, whether a Shimla showroom or the online brand you purchased from, and retain your PGI certificate and invoice.

Shimla remains the best place in the state to attempt resale, given its concentration of established jewellers.

Platinum's buying pattern in Himachal Pradesh is milestone driven, centred on engagements rather than the Dhanteras and hill wedding calendar that drives gold and silver buying, since traditional Himachali weddings remain firmly silver led.

Given how small this category is locally, many couples here choosing platinum plan their purchase around an online order timed well ahead of the occasion, rather than expecting to find their preferred design in a Shimla showroom.

If you are in Himachal Pradesh and considering a platinum engagement ring or lab grown diamond jewellery purchase, Lucira offers PGI certified platinum and certified lab grown diamond pieces with transparent, itemised pricing and doorstep delivery, so you can browse a wide selection without needing to search for a stocked Shimla showroom.

Every Lucira piece is priced against the live daily rate shown on this page, with making charges and certification costs shown separately.

Platinum here, as across India, is bought almost entirely for its jewellery value rather than as a savings instrument. There is no culture of buying platinum coins or bars for resale, and no dedicated platinum ETF product for Indian retail investors.

The practical framing for a buyer here is to treat platinum as a jewellery and lifestyle decision, chosen for durability and appearance, not as a store of value comparable to Himachal Pradesh's dominant silver tradition.

Platinum's international price has traded below gold per gram for much of the last decade, a reversal from most of the twentieth century, when platinum traded at a premium to gold, reflecting platinum's heavier dependence on automotive industrial demand.

This pricing relationship has made platinum a genuinely competitive option against gold for engagement rings in recent years, wherever it is available to buy.

Platinum mine supply is far more geographically concentrated than gold or silver, with South Africa and Russia together accounting for the large majority of global production, making the price genuinely more sensitive to mining disruptions in these two countries.

For Himachal Pradesh's jewellery buyers, none of this changes the practical advice, since platinum here is a jewellery decision, not a timing dependent investment.

Platinum is significantly denser than gold and silver, meaning a platinum piece of identical size contains more metal by weight. It is more resistant to everyday wear than gold and does not tarnish like silver, while remaining naturally white.

These physical properties, rather than investment characteristics, are the primary reasons the small pool of platinum buyers here choose it.

Platinum does not tarnish and is more scratch resistant in terms of metal loss than gold, though it develops a soft patina with wear that some owners prefer, while others have it professionally repolished.

Given the very limited number of jewellers locally who work with platinum, repolishing may need to be arranged with the retailer who sold the piece or during a visit to a larger Indian city.

A proper invoice should show the net platinum weight in grams, the purity as Pt 950 or Pt 900, the rate applied per gram that day, the making charge, and GST at 3 percent applied on the metal plus making charge combined.

For diamond set rings, the invoice should separately state the diamond value and certification alongside the platinum weight and rate. Keep the PGI Certificate of Authenticity together with your invoice.

• No PGI certificate offered with the piece, which should prompt caution given the absence of mandatory BIS hallmarking for platinum
• White gold sold or represented as platinum
• Making charges quoted verbally but not itemised on the final bill

Buying from an established, PGI affiliated retailer in Shimla or a reputable online brand is the most reliable way to avoid these issues.

• Pt 950: platinum that is 95 percent pure, the standard for most Indian platinum jewellery
• Pt 900: platinum that is 90 percent pure, less common
• PGI: the Platinum Guild International, the body that certifies platinum jewellery purity
• Certificate of Authenticity: the PGI document confirming a piece's purity and serial number
• Making charges: the fee a jeweller adds for crafting a piece

There is no prescribed CBDT safe harbour limit for platinum jewellery the way there is for gold. As with any valuable asset, holdings should be supportable through invoices and disclosed income if ever questioned.

Cash payments above the prescribed threshold require your PAN card, and payments above two lakh rupees in cash for a single transaction are not permitted regardless of PAN.

Since platinum is treated as a physical asset similar to jewellery, profit on resale held over 12 months would generally qualify for long term capital gains treatment at 12.5 percent without indexation.

Given how rarely platinum is resold purely for investment purposes here, this scenario is far less common in practice than for gold or silver.

Platinum jewellery arrived in the Indian bridal and gifting market considerably later than gold and silver, gaining traction mainly through national brand marketing from the early 2000s onward, centred on men's jewellery and couple bands.

Himachal Pradesh's own platinum retail presence, limited to a handful of Shimla showrooms, reflects this later, smaller scale national adoption layered on top of the state's much older, deeply rooted silver first tradition.

National platinum jewellery demand has grown steadily, driven by engagement ring trends among younger buyers. This shift has reached Himachal Pradesh only in a very limited way, mainly through Shimla showrooms and online ordering.

Given how deeply rooted silver remains in Himachali wedding tradition, platinum is likely to stay a small, engagement focused niche rather than meaningfully challenge silver's dominant position.

Platinum's strength and density make it a genuinely secure setting metal for diamonds, since prongs hold their shape and grip better over decades of wear compared with softer metals, an important factor for pieces meant to last a lifetime.

This is the primary reason platinum, where available here, skews so heavily toward diamond set engagement rings rather than plain bands or other jewellery categories.

In store buying in Shimla lets you see and try on a piece before committing, but the selection is limited to what the showroom happens to stock. Online buying from an established national brand offers a far wider range of designs, sizes and price points, delivered to your door.

For platinum specifically, given how thin local stock genuinely is, online buying from a certified brand is often the more practical route for buyers with a specific design in mind, particularly outside Shimla.

India's mandatory hallmarking regime, run by the Bureau of Indian Standards, currently covers gold and, since September 2025, silver, but has not been extended to platinum, which remains a considerably smaller category nationally.

Until platinum is brought under BIS hallmarking, the PGI Certificate of Authenticity remains the primary purity assurance available to buyers here, making it genuinely important to insist on one.

Unlike gold and silver, jewellers here do not typically run dedicated monthly instalment savings schemes for platinum, given how small and specific the category's demand is.

Buyers planning a platinum purchase, such as an engagement ring, generally save independently and pay the full amount at purchase, rather than through a jeweller run scheme.

• A Shimla showroom: very limited selection, but lets you try before buying
• An established national online brand: far wider selection, delivered to your door
• A jeweller during a visit to a larger city: an option some buyers here use for a wider in person selection

Given how small this category is locally, most buyers here with a specific platinum design in mind end up ordering online.

Property in Shimla or Manali requires a large upfront commitment and is illiquid, particularly given how tourism has pushed up prices. Platinum jewellery is far more liquid in principle, though genuinely harder to resell here than gold or silver given how few local buyers exist for it.

Given this, platinum should be treated as a jewellery and lifestyle purchase rather than a comparable asset class to property for buyers here.

Engagement rings remain platinum's strongest use case wherever it is sold in India, and this holds in Himachal Pradesh as well, where the very small platinum category skews heavily toward diamond set rings for younger, urban couples in Shimla.

Buyers elsewhere in Himachal Pradesh looking specifically for a platinum engagement ring will typically find a fuller range by ordering online from an established national brand than by relying on Shimla showroom stock alone.

Platinum bands, chains and bracelets marketed specifically toward men have been a consistent part of national platinum brand strategy, and this category makes up a real share of the very limited platinum stock available in Shimla.

For men here seeking a platinum piece outside a wedding band, a Shimla showroom visit or a national online brand remain the two realistic routes.

Platinum occupies a genuinely marginal position within Himachal Pradesh's jewellery economy, dwarfed by silver's dominant cultural role and gold's own smaller but still more established place, limited mainly to a handful of Shimla showrooms serving engagement ring buyers.

This is unlikely to change materially in the near term, since the cultural forces driving silver demand here simply do not extend to platinum the way they do elsewhere.

Clean platinum jewellery with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Unlike gold, minor surface scratches on platinum do not remove metal, since the metal simply displaces rather than wearing away, making it genuinely durable for everyday wear.

Store separately from other jewellery to avoid scratching softer metals, and have it professionally repolished periodically to restore its original shine, arranged through your retailer given the very limited number of specialists locally.

If you are comparing metals, check the gold and silver rates for Himachal Pradesh as well, where silver is genuinely the state's dominant jewellery metal.
