Gold Rate in Vizag (Visakhapatnam) Today – 7 Nov 2026, 1 AM IST

The figures in the live table are bullion reference rates for Vizag, quoted per gram across 24 karat gold at 99.9 percent purity, 22 karat at 91.6 percent, 18 karat at 75 percent and 14 karat at 58.5 percent, refreshed every business day against MCX and IBJA benchmarks.

Vizag and Visakhapatnam are the same city

Worth clearing up at the top, because both names are in constant use. Visakhapatnam is the official name, the one on the district records and on your invoice. Vizag is the everyday short form, and it is what most people say and search for. Some older material also uses Waltair, which was the name of the settlement around the railway and the ridge, and which survives in the name of the railway division.

Every jeweller in the city answers to all of them. There is no separate Vizag rate and no separate Visakhapatnam rate. This page uses the names interchangeably.

What each karat is used for in Vizag

• 24 karat | 99.9 percent pure | coins and bars for investment | the reference all other grades derive from
• 22 karat | 91.6 percent pure, called 916 | the overwhelming majority of what this city buys, including traditional Andhra bridal work
• 18 karat | 75 percent pure | diamond and gemstone settings, and contemporary daily wear
• 14 karat | 58.5 percent pure | lightweight everyday designs, a growing share among younger buyers

What these rates include and exclude

• Included | the value of the gold itself at the stated purity
• Excluded | VA charges, the local term for making charges, quoted as a percentage of gold value
• Excluded | GST at 3 percent, applied at billing
• Excluded | the value of any stones set into the piece
• Excluded | hallmarking charges, levied per piece

One local term to know before you shop. In Vizag and across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, making charges are commonly called VA charges, short for value addition. Jewellers advertise them that way, frequently as a headline figure starting from a low single digit percentage. Section 12 explains what that figure covers and what it can conceal.

The weight table converts today's per gram rate into the denominations Visakhapatnam buyers transact in, from a single gram through 10 grams, 50 grams, 100 grams and a kilogram, at each of the four common purities.

Units used in the Andhra market

Andhra Pradesh quotes per gram and per 10 grams, and the tola at 10 grams remains in everyday use. That aligns with the northern and western convention rather than with the 8 gram sovereign used in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

That distinction is worth holding onto, because Visakhapatnam is a southern city that does not use the southern unit. A buyer comparing a Vizag quote against a Chennai or Bengaluru one is comparing 10 grams against 8, and the 20 percent difference will mislead in whichever direction you are not expecting.

International markets quote the troy ounce, at 31.1035 grams. Gemstones are quoted in carats, where one carat is 0.2 grams.

All rates on this page are per gram, which is the only basis on which two quotes from different states can be compared honestly.

A single day's rate tells you very little. The last ten sessions tell you whether today's print sits at the top of a run, at the bottom of a pullback, or in the middle of a flat stretch.

Read three things from the ten day table. The net movement from the earliest session to today. The high and the low, which give the trading range. And whether daily changes are small and steady or large and alternating. A tight range usually means the market is waiting on something. A widening range normally follows a macro event, most often a US inflation reading, a central bank decision or a sharp move in the rupee.

Visakhapatnam prices from the same reference as Vijayawada, Guntur and the rest of Andhra Pradesh, and closely with Hyderabad. There is no district arbitrage worth pursuing.

How a salaried city reads this

Visakhapatnam has an unusually large salaried population for a city its size, drawn from the steel plant, the port, the naval establishment, public sector undertakings and a growing IT and pharmaceutical presence.

That produces buying tied to pay cycles and bonuses rather than to harvests or business receipts, and it makes demand here steadier month to month than in an agricultural or trading market. A salaried household planning a purchase can genuinely use the ten day range, because the money arrives on a predictable date and the timing is a choice rather than a constraint.

For a wedding purchase tied to a fixed muhurtham, none of this changes the plan.

The trend table sets today's Visakhapatnam rate against its opening and closing values over seven days, 30 days, three months, six months, the year to date and 12 months.

What each window tells you

The seven and 30 day windows capture sentiment: short term positioning, fund flows and reaction to news. The three and six month windows capture the macro cycle, principally the direction of real interest rates and the strength of the dollar. The 12 month and year to date windows capture the structural story, which in recent years has been sustained central bank accumulation alongside steady retail demand across Asia.

Longer windows are more reliable and less actionable. A 12 month gain confirms the asset did its job in a portfolio. It tells you nothing useful about next week's rate, and any source claiming otherwise is selling something.

A port city's exposure

Visakhapatnam's economy runs on the port, the steel plant, shipbuilding and repair, fisheries and the naval establishment. Several of those are directly exposed to global trade conditions and to commodity cycles.

That gives the trend table an indirect local reading. The same global conditions that push gold higher, meaning uncertainty, weak growth expectations and falling real yields, frequently also mean thinner trade volumes and softer commodity demand at the port.

For a salaried household with a secure job that is background noise. For a family whose income depends on port activity, shipping or the private industrial cluster around it, gold rising while local business slows is a pattern worth recognising rather than a coincidence.

The annual table shows the year end 24 karat rate per 10 grams across the last decade, with the change from the previous year.

What a decade of year end prices tells you

• The compounding is uneven | long flat stretches punctuated by sharp rallies, with most of the decade gain in a few years
• Entry point matters | buying at a rally peak has meant waiting years to recover in real terms
• Part of the gain is currency | a weaker rupee lifts the Indian price even when international gold is flat
• Duty changes create steps | a customs duty revision moves the retail rate independently of the world market
• Year end is one day | a single annual print hides the range the metal traded through that year

Long range figures are useful for context and poor for timing. A headline decade return quoted in rupees is also not the same as the metal's own performance, because a meaningful share of it is rupee depreciation.

The comparison a salaried household should make

For a public sector or steel plant employee with a provident fund, a pension entitlement and access to bank deposits, the honest benchmark is not whether gold beat inflation but whether it beat the other things that money could have gone into.

Over long periods a provident fund and a diversified equity holding have generally done more work than metal in a locker. What gold adds is that it does not depend on an employer, a scheme or a market staying orderly, and for a household that already has a pension the sensible role for gold is a modest one alongside those rather than instead of them.

The rate quoted at Jagadamba Junction is the last link in a chain that begins several hours earlier and several thousand kilometres away.

Step one: the international benchmark

Gold trades continuously in US dollars per troy ounce, anchored by the London Bullion Market Association price and by COMEX futures. Nothing in the Indian market is priced independently of it.

Step two: the rupee conversion

The dollar price is converted at the prevailing USD to INR rate. A weaker rupee raises the domestic price even when the international price has not moved.

Step three: duty and levies

Basic customs duty and the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess apply to landed value, because India imports almost all the gold it consumes. Andhra Pradesh levies no additional state tax on gold beyond GST.

Step four: the domestic benchmark

MCX futures and the rates published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association give the trade a common national reference, and local jewellers' associations distribute a city rate derived from it. That is why quotes across Visakhapatnam are broadly consistent on a given day.

Step five: the port that does not import gold

Visakhapatnam is one of India's major ports, and it is reasonable to assume that helps the local gold rate. It does not, and the reason is worth understanding.

Gold import is restricted to authorised entities and routed through a small number of designated channels, overwhelmingly the western and southern trading centres. Vizag handles coal, iron ore, containers, crude and general cargo at scale, and none of that has any bearing on where bullion enters the country.

So the metal reaches this city through the domestic trade like anywhere else inland, and Vizag prices in line with the rest of Andhra Pradesh. Being a port city is central to this economy and irrelevant to this rate.

The practical conclusion is the usual one. The rate is fixed and consistent across the city, and the VA charge is where your attention belongs.

Seven forces account for almost all daily movement. The first four are global, the last three domestic.

Real interest rates. Gold pays no income, so it competes with interest bearing assets. When inflation adjusted yields fall, holding gold costs less in opportunity terms and the price tends to rise. This is the most reliable single driver.

The US dollar. Gold is priced in dollars, so a stronger dollar generally pushes the international price down and a weaker dollar lifts it.

Central bank demand. Reserve buying has been large and persistent in recent years and is far less price sensitive than retail demand.

Geopolitical and financial stress. Conflict, banking stress and sovereign risk push capital toward assets with no counterparty.

The rupee. A weaker rupee raises the Visakhapatnam rate on its own, independent of any move in international gold.

Telugu seasonal demand. Ugadi, the Telugu new year in March or April, opens the year and carries auspicious buying. Akshaya Tritiya follows and is the single largest volume day of the Indian year. Varalakshmi Vratam in July or August is a significant occasion for women and drives jewellery buying specifically. Dasara and Diwali are the retail peaks, Sankranti in January is the major harvest festival across coastal Andhra, and the muhurtham wedding calendar governs the rest.

Policy. Import duty revisions and GST decisions produce one off steps in the retail price with no connection to the international market.

Gold supply is unusually inelastic. New mine output grows slowly and responds to a price rise only after several years, because discovery, permitting and construction typically runs well over a decade. A price spike cannot call forth new supply the way it can in most commodities.

Recycling is the flexible part. When prices rise sharply, households sell old jewellery and refined scrap returns to the market, cushioning the move.

A contrast a steel city will recognise

Visakhapatnam is built around a steel plant, and steel behaves in exactly the opposite way. When prices rise, capacity expands, new plants are commissioned, output climbs and prices come back down. That is the normal cycle of an industrial commodity and everyone in this city understands it.

Gold does not do that. High prices produce almost no additional supply, because the metal takes a decade or more to bring out of the ground and the deposits that are easy to reach have largely been worked. A rally in steel is self correcting. A rally in gold is not, at least not through supply.

That single difference explains why gold holds value across generations and why steel, for all its usefulness, does not. It is the clearest way to understand what you are actually buying.

Visakhapatnam's own position

This is a retail market rather than a manufacturing or bullion centre. Finished jewellery arrives from Hyderabad, Chennai, Coimbatore and elsewhere, and the traditional Andhra forms are made by karigars attached to individual shops rather than in a large workshop cluster.

On the demand side, central bank reserve buying has been the structural change of recent years, and it puts a firmer floor under the metal than retail demand alone would.

Nobody knows, and any page giving a confident target figure is guessing. What can be set out honestly is the conditions under which the rate would fall and those under which it would rise.

Conditions that would push the Visakhapatnam rate down

A sustained rise in real interest rates. A materially stronger dollar. A rupee that strengthens. A cut in import duty, which produces an immediate one off drop unrelated to the international market. A slowdown in central bank buying.

Conditions that would push it up

Falling real yields. A weaker rupee. Renewed geopolitical or banking stress. Continued reserve accumulation. A duty increase. And heavy muhurtham and festive demand across coastal Andhra, which firms the local premium even when the national benchmark is unchanged.

The advantage a salaried buyer has

Most of this page's readers cannot choose when they need gold, because a wedding date or a festival fixes it. A salaried household saving toward a purchase can, and that is a genuine advantage worth using properly.

Using it properly does not mean waiting for a forecast to come true. It means buying in instalments across several months, which converts a timing decision you cannot win into an averaging decision you do not need to win. Over a year of monthly buying, the average price you paid will be close to the average price of the year, and that is the best outcome available to anyone without a working crystal ball.

For a purchase tied to a fixed date, none of this should change the decision.

916 is another way of writing 22 karat. It refers to 91.6 percent pure gold, with the remaining 8.4 percent made up of alloy metals that give the piece strength. On 18 karat the equivalent grade is 750, and on 14 karat it is 585.

916 carries the overwhelming majority of jewellery sold in Visakhapatnam, and Andhra jewellers advertise BIS 916 hallmarking prominently. That is a genuine standard rather than a slogan.

The number is the purity grade stamped by a BIS recognised assaying and hallmarking centre, and it appears alongside the BIS logo and a six character HUID.

Signage is not verification

Because 916 appears on hoardings, shopfronts and advertising across the city, it is easy to stop reading it as a claim about a specific piece. It is not. The hallmark is the physical stamp on the item with a HUID behind it, and only that is evidence.

Check the piece rather than the sign. It takes under a minute and section 15 sets out how.

When you resell or exchange, the 916 grade determines the gold value you are credited. A verified hallmark negotiates from a known purity. Anything else negotiates from the buyer's own assessment.

The karat scale measures gold content in parts of 24. 24 karat is gold with no meaningful alloy content, usually expressed as 99.9 percent purity and stamped 999.

Pure gold is soft. It bends under everyday pressure, scratches easily and will not hold a stone setting or a clasp securely. This is why almost no wearable jewellery is made in 24 karat, and why a seller offering 24 karat bangles should be treated with caution.

Where 24 karat belongs is investment. Coins and minted bars are made at 999 or 999.9 purity and carry minimal making cost, and they are available across the established Visakhapatnam showrooms.

Why this matters for a salaried saver

A household saving a fixed amount each month toward gold faces a choice that compounds. Buying jewellery means paying a VA charge on every purchase, and none of that labour cost returns when you sell. Buying coins means paying a small premium and keeping almost the whole value.

Over ten years of monthly saving, that difference is substantial. The answer is not to stop buying jewellery, which is bought to be worn and given. It is to be clear which purchase is which, and to hold the savings portion in coins rather than in another chain.

Coins also pledge cleanly, because purity is certified and there is no VA charge for a lender to discount.

In Andhra Pradesh making charges are called VA charges, short for value addition, and they are quoted as a percentage of gold value. Across Visakhapatnam the range is wide, running from low single figures on plain machine made stock to the thirties on intricate hand worked bridal pieces.

The advertised figure and the applicable figure

Jewellers here commonly advertise VA charges starting from a low percentage. That headline figure is real and it applies to a specific part of the range, usually plain chains and machine made pieces.

It does not apply to the traditional bridal work most families actually come in to buy, where the labour is genuinely greater and the charge is correspondingly higher. There is nothing improper in that, and it does mean the number on the hoarding and the number on your bill can be very different.

Ask what VA percentage applies to the specific piece in front of you, before discussing anything else.

A worked example, line by line

The figures below use an illustrative 22 karat rate of 13,000 rupees per gram purely to keep the arithmetic readable. Substitute today's actual rate. The piece is a 20 gram 22 karat chain at 10 percent VA.

• Gold value | 20 grams at 13,000 per gram | 2,60,000 rupees
• VA charges | 10 percent of gold value | 26,000 rupees
• Subtotal before tax | 2,86,000 rupees
• GST | 3 percent on the subtotal | 8,580 rupees
• Hallmarking | per piece charge plus tax | approximately 45 rupees
• Final billed amount | approximately 2,94,625 rupees

The same chain across the range

• 3 percent, advertised entry VA on plain stock | approximately 2,75,825 rupees
• 10 percent, standard local work | approximately 2,94,625 rupees
• 18 percent, branded showroom or worked piece | approximately 3,16,105 rupees
• 30 percent, intricate hand worked bridal jewellery | approximately 3,48,325 rupees

Over 72,000 rupees separates the top and bottom rows on the same 20 grams of identical metal. That is the entire reason to ask about VA before anything else.

Wastage

Some jewellers charge wastage in addition to VA, calculated as a percentage of gold weight. Others fold it in. Two quotes are not comparable until you know which convention each uses, so ask directly and get both lines shown separately on the estimate.

How GST is applied

In most Visakhapatnam retail invoices the jewellery is billed as a composite supply and 3 percent GST is charged on the combined value of gold and VA. Where making is billed separately as job work, 5 percent can apply to that line instead.

A complete invoice protects you at purchase, at resale and at tax time. Before you pay, confirm every one of the following appears on it.

The invoice checklist

• Gross weight | total weight including stones | why it matters: it must not be the figure the gold rate is applied to
• Net gold weight | the gold alone | why it matters: the only correct basis for the gold calculation and for the VA percentage
• Purity | written as 916, 750 or 585 | why it matters: it fixes the rate applied and the resale value
• HUID | six characters, per hallmarked item | why it matters: the only way to verify the piece in the BIS CARE app
• Gold rate applied | per gram, on that date | why it matters: without it the calculation cannot be reproduced
• VA charges | percentage stated explicitly | why it matters: this is where the entire Visakhapatnam spread sits
• Wastage | as its own line if charged | why it matters: folded into VA it becomes invisible and non negotiable
• Stone weight and value | itemised where applicable | why it matters: stones are credited at little or nothing on exit
• GST | rate applied and the value it was applied to | why it matters: composite supply and job work are taxed differently
• Hallmarking charge | per piece | why it matters: it should be a small fixed amount, not a percentage
• Buyback and exchange terms | in writing | why it matters: the line most often omitted and the one that decides what you recover

The VA line deserves particular attention

Because VA is advertised as a headline number across this market, buyers frequently assume the advertised figure is what they were charged. Check the invoice rather than the impression. The percentage on your bill is the one that applied, and it may not be the one on the hoarding.

On a multi piece wedding purchase, require per item billing so you can see the VA applied to each. A consolidated bill hides variation between pieces and makes exchanging any single item difficult later.

Keep the invoice. It establishes your cost basis for capital gains and your provenance for insurance.

Purity is not a quality ranking. Each grade exists because it suits a different job, and choosing by the highest number is the most common and most expensive mistake a first time buyer makes.

The four grades compared

• 24 karat | stamped 999 | 99.9 percent gold | durability very low | coins and bars | not suitable for wear | highest resale value per gram
• 22 karat | stamped 916 | 91.6 percent gold | durability moderate | traditional Andhra bridal work and most jewellery sold here | strong resale value
• 18 karat | stamped 750 | 75 percent gold | durability high | diamond and gemstone settings, contemporary daily wear | moderate resale value
• 14 karat | stamped 585 | 58.5 percent gold | durability highest | lightweight designs at a lower price point | lowest resale value per gram

Why traditional Andhra work is 22 karat

The heavy South Indian repertoire, the kasulaperu coin necklace, the vaddanam waist belt and the temple style pieces, is built up by hand from worked sheet and wire and needs metal soft enough to take detail without cracking. 916 does that and a harder 18 karat alloy resists it.

The opposite applies to stones. A diamond needs a claw that will not flex over years of wear, and 18 karat grips far better than 22. A jeweller recommending 750 for a stone set piece and 916 for a traditional one is answering a technical constraint in both cases.

The short version. If gold content is the point, buy 22 karat or a coin. If the stone is the point, buy 18 karat and put the saving into a better certified stone rather than into extra metal nobody will ever see.

Verification takes under a minute and belongs before payment, not after.

Step one. Find the marks on the piece. They are small, usually on the inner band of a ring, the clasp of a chain or the reverse of a pendant. You are looking for the BIS logo, a three digit purity grade of 916, 750 or 585, and a six character alphanumeric HUID.

Step two. Download the BIS CARE app, published by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

Step three. Enter the HUID. The app returns the registered jeweller, the assaying centre, the purity and the item type. Check each field against the piece in your hand and against the invoice.

Step four. If the app returns nothing, or details that do not match, do not complete the purchase.

Finding the mark on traditional work

On a kasulaperu or a vaddanam the surfaces are heavily worked and rarely flat, which makes the hallmark harder to locate than on a plain chain. Expect it on a clasp, a reverse plate or an unworked edge, and ask the seller to point it out rather than concluding it is absent.

On a wedding purchase

An Andhra wedding set runs to many pieces bought together, and each carries its own HUID. Verifying a sample is not verification, and a set assembled from several sources may not be uniformly hallmarked. Set aside the time and do it at the counter before paying.

Testing gold you already own

BIS recognised assaying centres in Visakhapatnam carry out XRF testing for a nominal fee. It is non destructive and returns a purity reading in minutes. Do this before selling, exchanging or pledging inherited pieces, so that you negotiate from a measured figure rather than an assessment.

BIS recognised assaying and hallmarking centres operate across Visakhapatnam, serving the Jagadamba Junction and Dwaraka Nagar trade as well as the wider city.

The authoritative list of recognised centres, with addresses and registration numbers, is published by the Bureau of Indian Standards and revised as registrations are granted and withdrawn. Verify against the BIS list rather than any third party directory, including this page.

What a hallmarking centre actually does

It assays the metal to establish actual purity, applies the BIS mark and purity grade, and assigns the HUID linking the piece to a record. The centre is independent of the jeweller who sends the piece, and that independence is the entire basis of the system's credibility.

It is why a hallmark carries weight that a jeweller's own assurance does not, however established the house and however many decades a family has bought there. Reputation is worth a great deal and it is not the same thing as independent verification.

Using a centre yourself

You do not need a jeweller to take gold to an assaying centre. Walking in with inherited pieces and paying the nominal fee for an XRF reading is entirely normal, and it is the single most useful thing you can do before selling anything.

Households across coastal Andhra hold a great deal of jewellery bought before hallmarking became mandatory, where actual purity has never been measured. Arriving at a buyer with your own figure changes the conversation from an assessment into a negotiation.

KDM refers to cadmium soldered gold. Cadmium was used historically as a soldering alloy because it melts at a low temperature and produces a clean joint, allowing a high purity claim for the finished piece.

Cadmium is toxic. Prolonged exposure is associated with serious kidney and respiratory harm, and the burden fell heaviest on the karigars who worked with it daily. BIS no longer certifies KDM jewellery and it has been progressively replaced by safer solder alloys.

Current practice is hallmarked 916 gold with cadmium free solder. If a seller describes new stock as KDM, it is either old inventory or outside the hallmarking system, and neither is a reason to buy.

Why heavy South Indian work is affected

Traditional Andhra pieces involve a great many soldered joins. A kasulaperu has a join at every coin and every link, and a vaddanam is assembled from multiple worked sections. The more solder a piece contains relative to its gold, the further its measured purity can fall below the claim.

Inherited KDM pieces can be exchanged or sold normally. Have them assayed first, because KDM purity claims of 92 percent and above were frequently optimistic on heavily jointed work, and on a substantial family holding the difference between the claim and the measurement is a material sum.

Traditional South Indian jewellery is frequently set with stones, and stone pricing is the least transparent part of any bill. Four things to establish.

Gross weight versus net gold weight

If the gold rate is applied to total weight including stones, you are paying gold prices for gemstone weight. Net gold weight must be stated separately on the invoice.

Because VA here is a percentage of gold value, an inflated net weight raises two lines at once, the metal and the labour. That compounding is worth checking carefully on a heavily set piece.

The stone deduction convention

South Indian jewellers commonly apply a stone deduction, subtracting an allowance for stone weight before applying the gold rate. The principle is correct. The practice varies, because the deduction is often a conventional figure rather than an actual measurement.

Ask for the deducted weight to be stated on the invoice, and ask what deduction will apply on exchange. A piece sold with a small deduction and bought back with a large one costs you at both ends.

What the stones actually are

Traditional work uses a range of stones, from genuine rubies and emeralds to synthetic and imitation equivalents, and the same design is produced at several price points using different materials. None of that is dishonest. Selling one as another is. Ask directly whether each stone is natural, treated, synthetic or imitation, and get the answer in writing.

Independent certification and buyback

For any significant stone, insist on a report from a laboratory independent of the seller. And note that most jewellers buy back gold content at prevailing rates and assign little or nothing to stones, so on a heavily set piece a meaningful share of what you paid is unrecoverable.

Lab grown versus mined diamonds

Lab grown diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to mined diamonds and are graded on the same scale by the same laboratories. They are not simulants such as cubic zirconia or moissanite, which are entirely different materials and are widely used in traditional stone set work at low cost. The distinction belongs on the certificate and the invoice. Lucira's lab grown diamonds carry IGI or SGL certification.

Visakhapatnam's jewellery retail is spread across several commercial centres rather than concentrated in a single historic quarter, which is characteristic of a city that grew rapidly around a port and an industrial base.

Jagadamba Junction. The central shopping and commercial hub, named after the landmark theatre, and the densest concentration of jewellers in the city. Established houses and larger showrooms sit close together here, which makes comparison practical.

Kurupam Market and the Main Road area. The older trading quarter adjacent to Jagadamba, with long standing family jewellers and a more traditional character.

Dwaraka Nagar. A major commercial corridor carrying national brands and larger showrooms, with fixed pricing and certification as standard.

Gajuwaka. The main retail centre for the industrial belt in the south of the city, serving the steel plant and port workforce with its own established jewellers.

MVP Colony, Seethammadhara and the northern suburbs. Neighbourhood retail serving the residential areas, with mall showrooms for contemporary and diamond set pieces.

Online. Certified pieces with published pricing, delivery and return windows. Lucira has no physical store in Visakhapatnam or Andhra Pradesh, so buying from us here means ordering online with certified pieces and a 15 day money back window. Our nearest experience centres are in Mumbai and Delhi NCR.

The advice specific to this city

Because retail is dispersed, comparison takes a little more planning here than in a city with one old bazaar. Jagadamba Junction is the most efficient place to take three quotes in one visit, and worth doing before buying anywhere else.

Go on a weekday. The Junction is heavily congested at weekends and through the Dasara and Diwali run.

Vizag has a large and prosperous jewellery market and no historic jewellery quarter, and the reason is that the modern city is younger than its trade.

A city built by institutions

Visakhapatnam was a fishing and trading settlement on a natural harbour for a very long time, but the city as it exists today was built through the twentieth century by a series of large establishments: the port, the shipyard, the naval command, the steel plant and the refinery.

Each brought thousands of employees, and the retail that served them grew around residential areas and commercial junctions rather than around an old bazaar. That is why jewellery retail here is spread across Jagadamba Junction, Dwaraka Nagar, Gajuwaka and the suburbs instead of concentrated in a single quarter.

What that produces

A salaried buyer base, unusually large for a city of this size, buying on predictable income rather than on harvests or trading receipts. Steady demand across the year with sharp festive and muhurtham peaks on top.

And a market where organised retail and national brands hold a larger share than in an old bazaar city, because the buyer base grew up alongside them rather than with generations of relationships to a single family jeweller.

The regional catchment

Vizag is the commercial centre of north coastal Andhra Pradesh and draws buyers from Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and the districts inland, including the Agency areas. For a wedding purchase families travel here for the choice, which makes the market considerably larger than the city's own population suggests.

Practical guidance for a first visit

Go to Jagadamba Junction on a weekday, where three quotes are practical in one visit. Check the published rate before you leave. Ask what VA percentage applies to the specific piece rather than accepting the advertised figure. Ask separately about wastage and stone deduction. Verify the HUID on every item. And take a per item GST invoice.

Visakhapatnam has a well developed organised retail market, so the online comparison here is closer than in a city where the local trade is entirely traditional.

Where the local market wins

Traditional Andhra bridal work. A kasulaperu needs to be seen for how it sits and a vaddanam needs handling for weight and fit. These are substantial pieces worn for long days, and photographs tell you nothing about either.

Wedding purchases generally, where families are choosing many pieces together and want to see them as a set rather than individually.

Where online is stronger

Certified diamond jewellery, where published stone grades and independent certification remove the hardest judgement from the transaction.

Lighter contemporary pieces in 18 and 14 karat. Coins and bars, where there is nothing to judge by eye. And return windows, which give a reversal option a shop purchase does not.

There is also a specific advantage for a salaried buyer. Online listings state the making charge as a fixed published figure rather than as an opening position, which removes the negotiation entirely. For a buyer who would rather not haggle over VA, that clarity has real value.

What to check before buying online

BIS hallmarking with HUID on every gold item. Independent certification for every diamond, from a recognised laboratory rather than an in house one. A stated return period and who pays return shipping. Published buyback and exchange terms. Insured delivery. And a named entity with a verifiable address behind the website.

Apply that list to a local purchase too. The standards do not change because the showroom is on Dwaraka Nagar.

The rate is consistent across the city, so almost every avoidable cost sits in the VA charge or in something missing from the invoice.

Assuming the advertised VA applies to your piece. This is the central one in this market. A headline figure starting from a low percentage generally covers plain machine made stock, not the traditional bridal work you may have come in for. Ask what VA applies to the specific item.

Not taking three quotes. Jagadamba Junction makes that practical in a single visit, and the VA spread across the city is wide enough to justify it.

Treating 916 signage as verification. It is advertising. The hallmark on the piece with a checkable HUID is the evidence.

Wastage folded into VA or added on without mention. Ask which convention the shop uses and get both as separate lines.

Weight taken with the stones in. Net gold weight must be shown separately, and because VA is a percentage of gold value an inflated weight raises two lines at once.

A consolidated invoice on a multi piece set. Each item needs its own weight, purity, VA and HUID, or you cannot exchange one piece without the rest.

Comparing a Vizag quote against a Chennai or Bengaluru one without converting. Andhra quotes per 10 grams and those markets use the 8 gram sovereign.

Festive pressure. The Dasara and Diwali run fills the Junction, and a crowded counter is not where anyone reads an invoice carefully.

Visakhapatnam has an active market for old gold, including dedicated buyers alongside the jewellers, and that competition works in a seller's favour if you prepare properly.

Prepare first

Get the pieces assayed at a BIS recognised centre so you know actual purity before anyone quotes you. Gather original invoices where they exist. Check today's rate. Then take quotes from more than one buyer.

Your options

The original jeweller, if buyback terms were published at purchase. Established houses around Jagadamba Junction and Kurupam Market. Branded showrooms, which publish a deduction structure. And dedicated gold buying businesses, which advertise transparent valuation and instant settlement.

On that last category, the standard applies as everywhere: have your own assay figure first, get the valuation done in front of you, and confirm the deduction in writing before agreeing. A transparent process is genuinely valuable and it is not a substitute for knowing your own numbers.

Releasing pledged gold

Services exist in this city to help clear a gold loan and reclaim pledged jewellery, sometimes by buying the piece outright and settling the loan from the proceeds.

That can be a reasonable way out of a loan you cannot service. Understand clearly what you are agreeing to, because in some arrangements you do not get the jewellery back at all, you simply exit the loan. Ask explicitly whether the piece returns to you, and get the answer in writing.

What you will not recover

The VA charge, on any route. On a piece bought at 25 percent VA that is a substantial sum. And on stone set pieces, the stones. You are credited for metal.

Lucira's Old Gold Exchange credits 105 percent of prevailing value against a new purchase, though valuation happens at an experience centre and we have none in Andhra Pradesh. Contact us to arrange it rather than sending anything unannounced.

The Telugu calendar governs buying here, and it contains one month that is systematically avoided for auspicious purchases.

The Visakhapatnam gold buying year

• January | Sankranti | demand high | the major harvest festival across coastal Andhra and a significant buying occasion
• March or April | Ugadi | demand high | the Telugu new year, auspicious for beginnings and for buying
• April to May | Akshaya Tritiya | demand peak | the highest single day volume of the Indian year
• July or August | Ashada Masam | demand low | traditionally avoided for weddings and auspicious purchases, and the quietest stretch of the year
• July or August | Varalakshmi Vratam | demand high | a significant occasion for women and one that drives jewellery buying specifically
• September or October | Dasara | demand peak | the major festive period across Andhra
• October or November | Dhanteras and Diwali | demand peak | the busiest retail days of the year
• Muhurtham dates | demand very high around each | the Telugu almanac sets auspicious wedding dates and buying clusters around them

Ashada Masam is the window

Ashada Masam, falling roughly in July or August, is traditionally regarded as inauspicious for weddings and for new beginnings across Telugu households. Bridal buying stops and discretionary purchases are deferred.

Jewellers respond by discounting to keep footfall moving, and it is the most negotiable stretch of the Visakhapatnam year. Varalakshmi Vratam sits within or near it and lifts jewellery buying specifically, which is why the month is quiet for weddings without being entirely quiet for retail.

If your purchase is discretionary and not tied to an auspicious occasion, this is when to buy.

The practical implication

If the purchase is tied to a muhurtham or to Dhanteras, the date is fixed and rate timing is secondary, though commissioning heavy work months ahead is still worth doing. If it is discretionary, Ashada Masam is the clear window.

Bank lockers. The standard option, and Visakhapatnam is well banked given its institutional employer base. Annual rental varies by locker size and branch. Bank liability for locker contents is limited by regulation and generally capped at a multiple of the annual rent rather than the value of what is inside. Read the agreement rather than assuming full cover.

Home safes. A safe should be bolted into structure rather than free standing. Home insurance frequently caps jewellery cover at a low figure unless individual items are separately declared and valued.

The coastal and cyclone considerations

Two things distinguish storage on this coast. Salt air accelerates tarnish on the alloy content of lower karat pieces and on any silver components, so rinse and dry anything worn near the sea and store it dry.

More seriously, the north coastal Andhra seaboard is cyclone exposed, and Visakhapatnam has experienced severe storms in living memory. The gold itself is unaffected by wind and water. Paper is not.

Invoices, certificates and inventories lost to flooding or storm damage cannot be reconstructed, and without them you cannot establish cost basis for tax, prove provenance for insurance, or evidence what you owned if pieces are lost. Keep documents in sealed waterproof sleeves, hold digital copies in more than one place including outside the house, and photograph every piece.

A bank locker also addresses the physical risk in a way a home safe does not, since a safe bolted into a ground floor wall is exposed to exactly the flooding a cyclone brings.

Practical care

Store pieces individually in soft pouches rather than loose together. Avoid water and ultrasonic cleaners on any stone set piece where the setting uses foil or an adhesive backing. Keep a written inventory of weights, purities and HUIDs stored separately from the jewellery, and update it after every purchase or exchange.

Monthly instalment schemes are offered by most Visakhapatnam jewellers and they suit a salaried buyer base particularly well, because the payment matches how the income arrives.

The common structure. You pay a fixed amount monthly for a defined term, most often eleven months. At maturity the jeweller adds a bonus, commonly equal to one instalment, redeemable against jewellery.

The genuine benefits. Enforced saving. Rupee cost averaging across the term, which removes the timing decision entirely. A bonus that effectively discounts the purchase. Often a VA concession at redemption.

The question that decides the value

Ask what VA percentage applies at redemption, and whether the concession covers traditional bridal work or only plain stock. Given the width of the VA range in this city, that single answer determines whether the scheme is worth anything at all.

A bonus of one instalment in eleven is roughly nine percent of what you paid in. If the redemption VA is fifteen points above what you could have negotiated elsewhere, the scheme has cost you money while appearing to give you a discount.

What else to check before enrolling

Whether the scheme is registered with the Registrar of Companies, a legal requirement for deposit taking schemes. Whether the bonus is a fixed instalment or a percentage. Whether redemption is restricted to a limited catalogue. What happens if you miss an instalment. And whether cash redemption is possible.

The alternative worth weighing

A recurring deposit at a bank does the enforced saving job with no lock in to one jeweller, no catalogue restriction and deposit protection behind it. It does not accumulate gold, but it does leave you free to compare VA across the whole city when the time comes to buy. For a salaried household with a secure income, that flexibility is frequently worth more than the bonus.

Lucira's Vault of Dreams follows a 9 plus 1 structure: pay ten monthly instalments and receive eleven months of value at redemption, on published terms rather than terms negotiated case by case.

Eight formats are available to a Visakhapatnam buyer and they are not substitutes for one another. Purpose should decide the format.

The eight formats compared

• Plain gold jewellery | minimum is piece price | held physically | liquidity moderate | cost is VA, from low single figures upward | best for wearing and gifting
• Traditional Andhra bridal work | substantial piece price | held physically | liquidity moderate | high VA on significant weight | best for wearing and keeping
• Stone set jewellery | piece price | held physically | liquidity lower | VA plus stone value, neither recovered | best for wearing
• Coins | from half a gram | held physically | liquidity high | cost 2 to 8 percent premium | best for monthly accumulation and gifting
• Bars | from five grams | held physically | liquidity high | lowest premium | best for bulk holding
• Digital gold | from very small amounts | vaulted by provider | liquidity high | cost is the spread | best for small regular buying
• Gold ETF | one unit | held in demat | liquidity high in market hours | cost is the expense ratio | best for portfolio allocation
• Sovereign gold bond | one gram | demat or certificate | liquidity low until maturity | no VA, pays interest | best for a long untouched hold

The paper formats suit this city better than most

Visakhapatnam has an unusually high proportion of households with a bank account, a demat account and comfortable access to financial products, because of the institutional employer base. The access barriers that make ETFs and bonds impractical in some Indian markets largely do not apply here.

For a salaried household whose gold is genuinely savings rather than ornament, that matters. A sovereign gold bond held to maturity avoids VA entirely, avoids storage and cyclone risk, and pays interest on top. Very few Indian buyers are as well placed to use it as a Vizag PSU employee.

The decision rule

If the gold will be worn or given, buy jewellery and treat the VA as the price of that. If the objective is a store of value you may need quickly, coins carry the lowest premium. If it is long term savings you will not touch, bonds do the job better than metal in a locker.

Gold is simultaneously a commodity, a currency substitute and a cultural asset. The investment case rests on four properties.

It is nobody's liability. A bond depends on an issuer staying solvent. A deposit depends on a bank. Physically held gold depends on no one.

It behaves differently from equities, with low and sometimes negative correlation during market stress.

It preserves purchasing power over very long horizons, though it does not compound and generates no income.

And it is liquid and pledgeable within a day.

How this reads for a salaried household

A public sector or steel plant employee in Visakhapatnam typically has a provident fund, a pension entitlement, employer medical cover and access to bank deposits. That is a genuinely different starting position from most households on this site, and it changes what gold is for.

For a household with no other financial provision, gold is the emergency fund, the collateral and the retirement plan in one object. For a household that already has all three, gold is not filling a gap. It is diversification, and it should be sized as diversification rather than as a substitute for savings that already exist.

That argues for a modest allocation, most allocation frameworks landing on a single digit to low double digit percentage of a portfolio, held alongside the provident fund and equity rather than instead of them.

The one thing a pension cannot do

A pension is a promise from an institution, and it is denominated in rupees. Over a long retirement inflation erodes it steadily, and no amount of institutional solidity changes that.

Gold has historically been reasonable at preserving purchasing power over long periods, which is precisely the risk a fixed pension carries. That is the strongest honest argument for a salaried Vizag household holding some, and it is a better one than the vaguer case for gold as a hedge against everything.

Safe is doing a lot of work in that question, and separating the two meanings answers it.

If safe means low risk of permanent loss, gold scores well. It cannot default, cannot be diluted by an issuer, and has never gone to zero in any currency.

If safe means low volatility, gold scores poorly. Double digit annual swings are normal, drawdowns of 20 percent or more have happened repeatedly, and the metal has spent multi year stretches below a previous peak.

Why the volatility matters less here

For a household whose gold is its only safety net, a 20 percent drawdown is serious. For a Vizag household with a provident fund, a pension and a bank deposit alongside it, the same drawdown is absorbed by everything else and gold can be left alone to do its long term job.

That is the practical benefit of holding gold as one allocation among several rather than as the whole of a family's provision, and it is worth recognising as an advantage rather than taking for granted.

The risks specific to physical gold

Purity risk, which hallmarking with HUID largely solves and which remains real on older undocumented pieces until assayed.

Theft, loss and, on this coast, storm damage, which storage discipline, a bank locker and properly declared insurance address.

And the VA drag, which is the largest single determinant of outcome. A piece bought at 25 percent VA has to see the gold price rise by a quarter before you are level on the metal alone. A coin at a small premium does not.

The reasonable conclusion is that gold is a safe holding and an unreliable trade, and that it is safest as part of a set of provisions rather than as the only one.

Visakhapatnam property has been among the more talked about markets in southern India, partly because of the city's growth and partly because of periodic speculation about its administrative status. That volatility is itself the most important thing in this comparison.

Gold and Visakhapatnam property side by side

• Entry size | gold from one gram | property requires a large committed sum plus stamp duty, registration and brokerage
• Liquidity | gold converts to cash in a day | a property sale runs to months and depends on one specific buyer
• Speed as collateral | gold pledges the same day | a property backed facility takes weeks
• Income | gold produces none | property can be let, with genuine rental demand from the institutional workforce
• Price stability | gold is globally priced and does not respond to local announcements | Vizag land values have moved sharply on expectations about the city's administrative future
• Divisibility | gold can be sold twenty grams at a time | a plot cannot be sold in quarters
• Carrying cost | gold needs locker rental and insurance | property carries tax and maintenance, and coastal buildings need more of it
• Leverage | gold is normally bought outright | property is usually bought with a loan, amplifying both gain and loss

The row worth pausing on

Price stability. Land in and around this city has at times been bought on expectations about policy decisions rather than on rental yield or use value, and prices have moved in both directions as those expectations changed.

That is speculation, whatever it is called locally, and it carries the risks speculation carries. Gold is priced in a global market that has never heard of any Indian city's administrative arrangements, which makes it genuinely uncorrelated with that particular bet.

A household holding land bought on such expectations, and holding gold, has two assets doing genuinely different things. A household holding only the land does not.

On any land purchase in the outer areas, title diligence is not optional, and it matters more where prices have moved fast.

Gold is best understood next to the assets it sits alongside in a portfolio rather than on its own, and a salaried Visakhapatnam household is unusually likely to hold several of them already.

Four assets compared

• Gold | no income | volatility moderate | inflation protection strong | crisis behaviour typically rises | role is stabiliser
• Equity | dividends and reinvested earnings | volatility high | inflation protection moderate over long periods | crisis behaviour falls hard | role is long term growth
• Debt | fixed interest | volatility low | inflation protection weak | crisis behaviour generally stable | role is capital preservation
• Silver | no income | volatility very high | inflation protection moderate | industrial demand pulls both ways | role is a higher risk metals proxy

Equity. Over long horizons equity has outperformed gold in most markets, because businesses reinvest earnings and compound while metal does not. Equity also falls harder in a crisis, which is when a low correlation to gold is worth having.

Debt. Predictable nominal returns, suited to money with a known near term use. Its weakness is inflation, which erodes real returns at exactly the times that usually support gold, and that weakness applies to a provident fund and a pension as well.

Silver. Behaves like gold with the volatility amplified, since roughly half its demand is industrial. Andhra households hold silver in ritual and household articles, which is a cultural holding rather than an investment case.

The concentration a Vizag household should notice

A public sector employee typically has a salary, a provident fund and a pension entitlement all resting on the same employer, and frequently a house in the same city whose value depends on that employer's continued presence.

That is more concentrated than it looks. The provident fund and the pension are both rupee denominated institutional promises, and the property depends on the local economy. Gold and diversified equity are the two things in an ordinary household's reach that answer to neither.

For this profile the honest gap is usually equity rather than more gold, because equity compounds and gold does not. But holding some of both alongside the institutional provision is stronger than holding either alone.

All the gold ever mined amounts to a surprisingly small quantity. Estimates from the World Gold Council place it at somewhat over two hundred thousand tonnes, a volume that would fit inside a cube a little over twenty metres on each side.

Roughly half of that exists as jewellery. The remainder splits between private investment holdings in bars and coins, official reserves held by central banks and the International Monetary Fund, and industrial use.

Annual mine production adds only a small percentage to the existing stock each year, and that rate has been broadly flat despite higher prices. This is the structural reason gold holds value: the quantity in existence cannot be expanded quickly by decision, unlike a currency.

A comparison this city can measure

Visakhapatnam Port handles tens of millions of tonnes of cargo in a year, and the steel plant produces millions of tonnes of steel. Against those numbers, all the gold ever mined in human history, somewhat over two hundred thousand tonnes, is a rounding error.

That is the point rather than a curiosity. Iron ore and coal move through this port by the shipload because there is a great deal of both and more can always be dug. Gold does not, because there is very little and no amount of demand produces much more.

Scarcity is not a marketing claim about gold. It is a measurable fact, and a port city is unusually well placed to feel the scale of it.

India produces very little gold and imports almost all of what it consumes, yet Indian households collectively hold one of the largest private gold stocks in the world.

Gold's long run return in rupee terms has been respectable, but the shape of it is what matters and it is rarely explained.

The returns are lumpy rather than steady. Long flat periods are followed by short sharp rallies, and most of the multi decade gain is concentrated in a small number of years. Entry point therefore matters a great deal.

Part of the Indian return is currency. When the rupee weakens against the dollar, the rupee gold price rises even if international gold is unchanged, so a headline rupee return overstates what the metal itself did.

Where VA changes the arithmetic

A coin bought at a small premium tracks the metal closely. A chain at 10 percent VA starts a tenth behind. A hand worked bridal piece at 30 percent VA starts nearly a third behind and never recovers that labour on resale.

Three Visakhapatnam families buying on the same Dhanteras at the same rate can therefore end up in very different places, purely because of what they chose and what VA applied. Nobody was cheated in any of the three cases.

The advantage of buying monthly

A salaried household buying a fixed rupee amount each month automatically buys more grams when the price is low and fewer when it is high. Over a long period that produces an average cost close to the average price of the period, without requiring any view about where gold is going.

That is not a clever strategy, it is simply what regular buying does, and it is available to anyone with a predictable income. It is the single most useful thing a Vizag salaried buyer can do about entry point risk.

The sober conclusion is that gold has preserved purchasing power reliably and generated wealth unreliably. Judge a holding over a decade, not a quarter.

Three routes to owning gold as an asset rather than an ornament, with genuinely different characteristics.

Physical, ETF and sovereign gold bond compared

• Physical gold | held by you | entry cost is VA or coin premium | storage cost is locker and insurance | liquidity high | earns nothing | can be worn, gifted and pledged same day
• Gold ETF | held in demat | entry cost is brokerage | ongoing cost is the expense ratio | liquidity high through market hours | earns nothing | cannot be pledged for a same day loan
• Sovereign gold bond | demat or certificate | no entry premium | no storage cost | liquidity low before maturity | pays fixed interest on the invested amount | availability depends on issuance windows

Physical gold has no counterparty and no platform dependency. It is the only format that satisfies the role gold plays at a Telugu wedding, and the only one that can be handed to the next generation as an object.

Gold ETFs track the metal closely and remove VA and storage in one step. Sovereign gold bonds pay interest on top of tracking the price, with historically favourable tax treatment on redemption at maturity.

Why bonds fit this city particularly well

Three reasons converge here. The access barriers are low, because a salaried Vizag household typically has the bank and demat relationship already. The savings horizon is long, because a household with a pension is not depending on this money for emergencies. And the storage risk is real, because this is a cyclone exposed coast.

A bond avoids VA entirely, avoids storage and weather risk, pays interest, and has historically carried favourable tax treatment on redemption at maturity. For the savings portion of a salaried household's gold, it is a stronger answer than metal in a locker.

The constraint is liquidity. Bonds reward holding to term and penalise early exit, so money that might be needed sooner belongs in coins instead.

Coins are the most efficient way for a salaried household to accumulate physical gold, and in a market where VA is the main cost that advantage is substantial.

What to buy. 999 or 999.9 purity, from a recognised mint or an established jeweller, tamper evident sealed with an assay certificate. Denominations run from 1 gram through 2, 5, 8 and 10 grams.

Smaller coins carry a higher premium per gram, so a household saving monthly is better off accumulating to a larger denomination before buying than purchasing one gram every month.

Where to buy. Established houses around Jagadamba Junction and the branded showrooms on Dwaraka Nagar. Compare the coin premium as you would compare VA on jewellery, because it varies.

What to check. That the coin is sealed and the seal intact, because breaking it reduces resale value. That the invoice states purity, weight and mint. And that the seller will buy it back, on what basis.

The bank caution. Several banks sell gold coins and most will not buy them back. If you buy from a bank you will need a jeweller to exit, usually at a lower price than a jeweller would pay on a coin they sold themselves.

The arithmetic over a working life

A household putting a fixed amount into gold every month for twenty years faces the VA question two hundred and forty times. Choosing coins over light jewellery for that portion keeps a large cumulative sum that would otherwise have gone into labour charges never recovered on exit.

Buy the jewellery the family will actually wear and give. Hold the accumulation in coins, or in bonds if the money will not be needed for years.

Gold futures are exchange traded contracts to buy or sell a fixed quantity of gold at a set price on a future date. In India they trade on MCX, and MCX prices are one of the two benchmarks jewellers use to set the daily rate.

Who actually uses them. Jewellers and bullion dealers hedge inventory, locking in a selling price to remove metal price risk from a business whose margin comes from turnover. Traders take a leveraged view. Retail savers have no reason to touch them.

Why they are unsuitable. Futures trade on margin, so a small adverse move can require additional funds at short notice and can wipe out the position entirely. Contracts expire, so a long term view requires rolling positions and paying for it. None of this resembles buying a coin and putting it in a locker.

A caution aimed at a salaried city

Trading and advisory services are marketed persistently to salaried professionals with steady income and limited time to scrutinise, and public sector employees are a well recognised target for exactly that reason.

If someone offers managed gold or commodity trading with indicative monthly returns, the honest answer is that nobody who could reliably deliver them would need your capital. Check registration with the relevant regulator before parting with anything, and be particularly careful where the approach comes through a colleague or a workplace connection.

The one useful thing a non trader can take from the futures market is information. MCX prices are public and give a live read on where the domestic market is pricing gold, which is a helpful sanity check against any rate quoted to you.

A gold loan is secured against jewellery you pledge. A personal loan is unsecured and priced off your credit profile. Both are widely available across Visakhapatnam through banks and regulated non banking finance companies.

The two compared

• Security | gold loan is secured against pledged jewellery | personal loan is unsecured
• Interest rate | gold loan is materially cheaper | personal loan is dearer
• Approval basis | gold loan depends mainly on assessed purity and weight | personal loan depends on income proof and credit score
• Speed | gold loan is often disbursed the same day | personal loan takes longer
• Risk on default | gold loan means losing the pledged jewellery | personal loan means credit damage and recovery action
• Price risk | gold loan can attract a margin call if gold falls sharply | personal loan has none

The salaried buyer's choice is genuinely open

Most households in India take gold loans because unsecured credit is unavailable to them. A Visakhapatnam public sector or steel plant employee with documented income and a credit history has both options, and that changes the calculation.

A gold loan is still cheaper on interest. But a personal loan risks your credit record, while a gold loan risks jewellery that may be irreplaceable for family reasons rather than financial ones. For a modest sum with a secure repayment source, the unsecured route sometimes protects the thing that actually matters.

Salaried employees may also have access to employer welfare loans or cooperative society credit at rates a commercial lender will not match. Check those before pledging anything.

If you do pledge

Have the pieces independently assayed so you know the purity the valuation should reflect. Borrow below the maximum loan to value so a price fall does not trigger a demand you cannot meet. Understand whether interest accrues to a bullet payment or is paid monthly. Check processing fees, prepayment charges, and how the lender stores and insures the jewellery. And use a bank or a regulated NBFC.

A small but genuine share of annual gold demand comes from industry rather than jewellery or investment.

Electronics is the largest industrial use. Gold conducts electricity well and, unlike copper or silver, does not corrode or tarnish, which makes it the material of choice for connectors, bonding wires and contacts in devices where a failed connection is unacceptable. Medicine and dentistry use it for biocompatibility, and aerospace and defence for reliable contacts and reflective coatings.

The property that matters in a marine city

Gold's resistance to corrosion is why it is used in contacts and connectors, and that has particular relevance in a naval and shipbuilding city. Salt air and marine humidity destroy ordinary electrical contacts, and the applications where reliability cannot fail are exactly where gold plating is specified.

The same property has a domestic consequence. Gold jewellery does not tarnish in coastal air the way silver does, which is one practical reason gold holds its place in a seaboard city where salt attacks almost everything else.

Visakhapatnam's own industry does not consume gold

Worth being accurate. The steel plant, the port, the shipyard and the refinery are large industrial operations and none of them uses gold in meaningful quantity. Gold in this city is bought, worn and saved rather than consumed industrially.

Two implications for the wider market. Industrial demand is largely price insensitive at small per unit quantities, so it does not fall away when gold gets expensive. And a growing volume of gold is recovered from electronic waste, which now forms a meaningful part of recycled supply.

Tax on gold arises at three points: when you buy it, when you sell it, and in certain cases when you receive it as a gift.

At purchase. GST applies to gold jewellery at 3 percent, in most retail invoices on the combined value of gold and VA as a composite supply. Where making is billed separately as job work, 5 percent can apply to that line. TCS may also apply on high value cash purchases above the prescribed threshold. Andhra Pradesh levies no additional state tax on gold beyond GST.

At sale

Any gain is taxed as capital gains. The rate and the holding period separating short term from long term have been revised in recent Union Budgets, and treatment now differs between physical gold, gold funds and sovereign gold bonds.

For a salaried household this matters more than it does for someone below the taxable threshold, because a capital gain sits on top of salary income and the total determines the position. It is worth computing rather than assuming, particularly on a large disposal.

On gifts

Gold received from specified close relatives is generally exempt. Gold received from others above a prescribed value can be taxable as income from other sources. Gifts received on the occasion of the recipient's marriage are generally exempt.

On holding

India has no wealth tax on gold at present and no legal limit on how much a household may own, though tax authorities may ask you to explain the source of holdings inconsistent with declared income.

A salaried household is unusually well placed here, because income is documented and purchases made from salary through banking channels are straightforward to evidence. Keeping invoices closes the loop entirely.

Important. Tax rules on gold have changed more than once in recent Finance Acts. Treat this as general orientation rather than advice and confirm the current position before you transact.

The calculation itself is simple. The complications are documentary.

Start with the sale consideration, meaning what you actually received. Subtract the cost of acquisition, meaning what you originally paid, including VA and GST where they formed part of the cost. Subtract any expenditure incurred wholly in connection with the sale. What remains is the capital gain.

Whether that gain is short term or long term depends on the holding period, and the threshold has been revised in recent Budgets. The rate differs between the two categories and has also changed, including the treatment of indexation.

Do not forget the VA

VA charges formed part of what you paid, so they form part of your cost of acquisition. On a piece bought at 25 percent VA that is a substantial deduction, and leaving it out overstates your gain considerably.

That is only available to you if the invoice states the VA separately, which is one more reason section 13 insists on itemisation.

Inherited gold

Inheritance itself is not a taxable transfer. When you sell, the cost of acquisition is generally taken as the cost to the previous owner, and the holding period generally includes theirs. For very old holdings there are specific rules for establishing a cost where no record exists.

What to keep: itemised purchase invoices showing VA separately, valuation reports, documentation of inheritance, and the sale invoice or buyback receipt. Keep them somewhere that will survive a storm. This section is general information and not tax advice.

Paper gold is taxed differently from physical gold, and the differences have been revised repeatedly, so this section describes the structure rather than fixed numbers.

Gold ETFs and gold mutual funds. Gains are treated as capital gains, with the classification between short term and long term determined by the holding period applicable in the year of sale. Both threshold and rate have been amended in recent Finance Acts. There is no GST on buying units, which is one structural advantage over physical purchase.

Sovereign gold bonds. Two separate streams. The interest paid on the invested amount is taxable as income in the year received. The capital gain on redemption at maturity has historically been exempt for individual holders, which is the single most attractive feature of the instrument. Gains on secondary market sale before maturity are treated differently.

Digital gold. Generally taxed in the same manner as physical gold. Confirm the treatment with the provider.

The point a salaried holder should weigh

Sovereign gold bond interest is taxable at your slab rate, so for someone already paying tax on a salary the headline coupon is worth less after tax than it first appears.

The exemption on redemption at maturity is the genuinely valuable feature, and it rewards holding to term rather than selling early. For a household with a pension and no pressing need for the money, that suits the situation almost exactly, which is why section 34 recommends bonds for the savings portion here.

Because these rules move, check the current position for the relevant financial year before choosing between formats on tax grounds. This is general information rather than advice.

Visakhapatnam is an old harbour and a young city, and the gold trade here belongs to the young city rather than the old harbour.

The natural harbour

The bay sheltered by Dolphin's Nose has been used by traders for centuries, and the coast was part of the sea routes linking the Coromandel and Bengal trade. But the settlement remained modest, and Visakhapatnam was a district town rather than a major commercial centre for most of its history.

The twentieth century transformation

The modern port opened in the early twentieth century, the shipyard followed, and after independence came the Eastern Naval Command, the refinery and, in the 1970s and 1980s, the steel plant. Each brought a workforce, housing, and the retail that serves both.

Jagadamba Junction became the central commercial hub through that period, taking its name from a cinema rather than from a trading guild, which tells you something about when the area developed.

Why that shapes the trade

Cities with centuries old jewellery quarters have generations of relationships between families and jewellers, and a wholesale trade that grew alongside the retail. Visakhapatnam has neither in the same way.

What it has instead is a modern organised retail market serving a salaried population, with national and regional chains holding a substantial share, and finished stock arriving from Hyderabad, Chennai and the manufacturing centres.

That is neither better nor worse than an old bazaar. It does mean a buyer here relies more on published standards, hallmarking and comparison between showrooms than on a relationship built over decades, and this page is written accordingly.

What has changed recently is what has changed everywhere: mandatory hallmarking, certification as standard on diamonds, and the arrival of online buying alongside the showrooms.

Visakhapatnam's demand profile is closer to a metro than to a typical district city, because of who lives here.

Who is buying

A large salaried population drawn from the port, the steel plant, the shipyard, the naval establishment, the refinery, public sector undertakings and a growing IT and pharmaceutical presence. This group buys on predictable income, frequently around bonus periods, and is comfortable with organised retail and published pricing.

A commercial and trading class serving the port economy.

And the regional catchment across north coastal Andhra, including Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and the districts inland, whose families travel here for wedding purchases because the choice is wider.

What that produces

Steadier demand through the year than an agricultural or trading market shows, with sharp peaks at Dasara, Dhanteras and around muhurtham dates, and a pronounced trough during Ashada Masam.

It also produces a buyer who is comparatively price aware. A salaried household with a fixed budget compares VA across showrooms in a way a buyer with irregular income and an urgent occasion cannot, and the market has adapted to that by advertising VA prominently.

The consequence for reading this page. Visakhapatnam demand responds more to the calendar and to pay cycles than to the gold rate. A quiet showroom in July usually means Ashada Masam rather than anything about the price.

Volume and value tell different stories, and in this city a third change is running underneath both.

By weight, the trend is downward. Higher prices mean a given budget buys fewer grams, and younger buyers have moved toward lighter construction and lower karat pieces for daily wear.

By value, the trend is upward. Higher prices and larger average transaction values have kept spending growth positive, and growth in certified diamond jewellery has added to it.

The shift into paper is more advanced here

The genuinely notable development in Visakhapatnam is that a salaried, financially literate population increasingly holds part of its gold exposure through ETFs, digital gold and sovereign gold bonds rather than as metal.

That is a rational response to a high VA environment, and it means investment demand that would once have arrived at a Jagadamba Junction counter now arrives at a brokerage instead. Showroom footfall understates total gold buying by Vizag households, probably by more than in most Indian cities.

The jewellery market has responded by competing harder on VA and on design rather than on the metal, which is the correct response and good for buyers.

What has not changed. Weddings remain the anchor, muhurtham dates still govern the calendar, Dhanteras remains the biggest single day, and families across north coastal Andhra still travel here for a serious purchase.

Rates across Indian cities are set from the same national benchmark and then diverge slightly. On a typical day the spread between major cities is modest, commonly a hundred to a few hundred rupees per 10 grams.

Where Visakhapatnam sits

Vizag prices in line with the rest of Andhra Pradesh and closely with Hyderabad and Chennai. As section 6 explains, being a major port does not lower the local gold rate, because bullion enters India through a small number of designated channels that do not include this one.

Andhra Pradesh levies no additional state tax on gold beyond GST, so there is no state level difference on top.

The two comparisons that mislead

The unit. Andhra quotes per 10 grams while Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka use the 8 gram sovereign or pavan. A Chennai or Bengaluru figure set against a Vizag one is comparing different quantities.

The making charge convention. Vizag quotes VA as a percentage of gold value. Jaipur, Chandigarh, Patna and Rajkot quote a rupee figure per gram instead, and the two are not equivalent. Divide the per gram figure by the gold rate per gram to convert before comparing.

The practical conclusion

Inter city rate differences are small and not worth acting on. The VA spread within Visakhapatnam is several times larger, negotiable, and comparable in a single visit to Jagadamba Junction. That is where the money is.

Every city rate published on this site derives from the same national benchmark set by MCX and IBJA references. What varies between cities is the local physical premium, not the underlying price of gold.

Two consequences follow. A difference of a few hundred rupees per 10 grams between two cities is normal. And a large apparent difference between two published sources for the same city usually reflects a difference in what is being quoted, most often a pre tax bullion reference against a retail rate that already includes local premium.

The unit map, which matters more for Andhra than most

• Andhra Pradesh and Telangana | per gram and per 10 grams | the convention on this page
• Tamil Nadu and Karnataka | sovereign, 8 grams | a 20 percent difference from the 10 gram figure
• Kerala | pavan, 8 grams | the same weight as a sovereign
• West Bengal | bhori, 11.66 grams | higher again
• Northern and western India | per 10 grams | the same as Andhra

Visakhapatnam sits in the south geographically and in the north by unit convention, which catches people out in both directions. Convert everything to per gram before drawing a conclusion.

Rates for other cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune, Jaipur, Surat, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Kochi, Indore, Varanasi, Patna, Ludhiana and Rajkot, are published on their own pages on this site and updated on the same daily cycle.

India produces very little gold domestically and imports the overwhelming majority of what it consumes. This section is worth reading carefully in a port city, because the obvious assumption is wrong.

Who may import

Import is restricted to authorised entities: nominated banks, agencies designated by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, and qualified jewellers operating through the International Financial Services Centre route. Individuals cannot import commercially.

Gold arrives through a small number of designated entry points, overwhelmingly in the west and south, and moves onward through the domestic trade. A port handling bulk cargo, containers and crude is not part of that chain simply by virtue of being a port.

So Visakhapatnam receives its gold the way an inland city does, and the local rate reflects that rather than any harbour advantage.

Duties applied

Basic customs duty together with the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess is levied on landed value. A duty change flows into the retail rate almost immediately and nationwide, producing a visible one off step unrelated to any international movement.

A word about smuggling

High import duty creates an incentive for illegal import, and enforcement action is reported periodically at airports and ports across India including this one.

For a buyer the relevance is simple. Gold offered well below the prevailing rate, without a hallmark or a proper invoice, is a problem whatever its origin. A BIS hallmarked piece with a HUID and a GST invoice from an established jeweller is documented gold, and that is the only kind worth owning.

Personal allowances

Returning Indian residents may bring limited quantities of gold jewellery within specified allowances that vary by gender and duration of stay abroad, with duty payable above the threshold. Allowances are revised periodically and should be confirmed with customs before travelling rather than assumed.

Government schemes have been introduced periodically to bring privately held household gold into the formal economy, allowing holders to earn a return on idle metal rather than paying to store it.

The general structure. Gold is deposited with a participating bank, assayed for purity, and held for a defined term. The depositor earns interest denominated in gold. At maturity, redemption is available in gold or cash depending on the scheme and tenure chosen.

This city is closer to the intended user than most

These schemes were designed for households with genuinely idle gold, other financial resources, and enough banking comfort to use a formal product. A salaried Visakhapatnam household with a provident fund and a pension fits that description more closely than most Indian buyers do.

Where the household holds coins, bars or plain gold it will not wear and does not need for emergencies, and is paying locker rental on it, a deposit scheme is a reasonable option to look at.

The limits still apply

Deposited jewellery is melted for assaying and the specific piece does not come back. Inherited or wedding jewellery is not a candidate whatever the return, and on stone set pieces the stones would have to be removed first.

And the tenure locks the gold away, so anything that might be needed at short notice does not belong in a scheme.

The honest comparison

For a household in this position, the real alternative is not the locker. It is a sovereign gold bond, which gives gold price exposure, pays interest, requires no storage, carries no cyclone risk and has historically had favourable tax treatment on redemption at maturity.

If you are weighing a deposit scheme for metal you already hold, that is the comparison. If you are choosing where to put new savings, the bond is generally the cleaner instrument.

Availability. Scheme terms, participating banks and tenure options have changed since introduction, and some variants have been discontinued or restructured. Check current availability directly with a participating bank rather than relying on any published summary, including this one.

You can work out what a piece should cost before you reach the counter, and in this market the calculation has one question you must ask first.

The formula

• Step 1 | Establish the VA | ask what percentage applies to this specific piece, not the advertised figure
• Step 2 | Gold value | net gold weight in grams multiplied by today's rate for that purity
• Step 3 | VA charges | gold value multiplied by the VA percentage
• Step 4 | Wastage | if charged separately, as a stated percentage of gold value
• Step 5 | Stones | on a set piece, stated separately by weight and value
• Step 6 | GST | 3 percent applied to the sum of the lines above
• Add | hallmarking charge, a small fixed amount per piece

Worked example

A 25 gram 22 karat piece at an illustrative 13,000 rupees per gram with 12 percent VA. Gold value 3,25,000 rupees. VA 39,000 rupees. Subtotal 3,64,000 rupees. GST 10,920 rupees. Hallmarking roughly 45 rupees. Total approximately 3,74,965 rupees.

What changing only the VA does

On the same 25 grams at the same rate, 5 percent VA gives roughly 3,51,420 rupees and 28 percent VA gives roughly 4,28,445 rupees.

That is a spread of about 77,000 rupees on identical metal, decided by one number that is frequently not the number on the hoarding. It is the reason this page returns to VA repeatedly.

Checking a quote

Run the calculation on the estimate before you pay. If it does not reconcile, the likeliest explanations are a higher VA than the one quoted verbally, an undisclosed wastage line, or a stone weight included in the gold calculation.
